Passing Strange
Obsidian Theatre
3522 White Oak Drive Houston
The New York Times hailed it as "a rock concert with a story to tell ... a sprawling work of performance art, complete with angry rants and scary drag queens." The late, great Roger Ebert simply called it "one of the best musicals" he'd ever seen. Now Houston's Obsidian Theater brings an all-new production of the electrifying, genre-defying rock-soul musical Passing Strange to the stage. Passing Strange tells the coming-of-age story of a rebellious young black man from L.A. who leaves home in the '80s for Europe in search of the "real," and who must deal with the racial stereotypes he both embraces and rejects along his journey. Redefining what a musical looks, sounds and feels like, this gritty, heartfelt, Tony-winning smash injects the band, narrator, cast and audience right into the show -- and just might shake up your conceptions of manhood, race, identity and what a musical can do by the time its final rockin' notes ring out.
