Garson Kanin, writer of such classic films as Adam's Rib and Pat and Mike, penned this 1946 Broadway smash that was turned into an Oscar-nominated romantic comedy. Now presented at Alley Theatre in Houston, Born Yesterday centers around unscrupulous tycoon Harry Brock, who heads off to Washington to purchase a few congressmen accompanied by his ex-showgirl mistress, Billie Dawn. Brock hires a newspaper reporter to soften Billie's rough edges for D.C. society, but the reporter's lessons teach her to smarten up and see Brock for the corrupt businessman he truly is.
